Indoor Air Quality Testing

Indoor air pollution is a problem in many homes, especially during the winter months when windows and doors are closed most of the time, reducing opportunities for removing pollution particles. Indoor air quality can be improved in many different ways. Two ways of improving indoor air quality are eliminating and reducing air pollutants in the home.

Eliminating air pollutants is one way to improve indoor air quality. This can be accomplished by not bringing pollutants into the home. Reducing air pollutants can be accomplished by removing pollutants from the home. For people who suffer from allergies or respiratory problems, improving indoor air quality is necessary. Below are some tips for improving indoor air quality.

Eliminating Air Pollutants

  1. Ban Tobacco Smoke. Environmental tobacco smoke is one pollutant that can be eliminated. People who smoke should stop because environmental tobacco smoke is known to cause cancer in humans and second hand smoke can cause respiratory problems, especially for children and people suffering from respiratory infections. Guests who smoke should not be allowed to smoke inside the house.
  2. Use Natural Cleaning Products. Some household products contain harmful chemicals that are released into the air. Warning labels affixed to the containers cautions consumers of chemical exposure and steps to take if exposed. Eliminating the use of these products or substituting natural products like lemon juice, vinegar, borax, salt, baking soda and mineral oil can help with eliminating pollutants.
  3. Evaluate Glues and Markers. Some glues and permanent markers contain chemicals that cause eye and respiratory irritation. Before bringing these types of products into the home, individuals need to read labels to evaluate whether the product would affect the air quality.
  4. Remove Furniture Containing Formaldehyde. Particle board or pressed wood products are known to contain formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen. If furniture made from these products is in the home, it should be removed if determined to contain formaldehyde.

Reducing Air Pollutants

Not all indoor air pollutants can be eliminated; therefore, improving air quality may be done by reducing the amount of pollutants in the home.
